Martin Luther King Junior Bronze Statue
Sister Margaret and Dr. Moses worked hard to push for the creation of the Bronze Statue to honor Dr. King’s memory. As part of the Raleigh King Committee, Sister Margaret worked with others to construct a statue and memorial garden in Southeast Raleigh. There was a dedication planned for Jan. 16, 1990, the fifth national holiday honoring Dr. King

Here, the project “has strong support from the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce” and has raised over $50,000 from businesses and individuals. Mosher highlights that the statue will be the focus of the memorial garden that will recognize other human rights activists and those who have spoken up against the issues in North Carolina.

Article written on May 18th, 1989 in The Carolinian. Part of NC’s Semi-Weekly, the article highlights the importance of the Bronze Statue being constructed in honor of Dr. King. According to the writer, there has been an unprecedented amount of support in building the first public shrine honoring the civil rights leader. It was a $180,000 project that has received donations from a wide range of businesses and leaders. Sister Margaret was very active in accomplishing this project.

Article written on October 14th, 1989. Memo states that “Crabtree Mall sought to cuts in bus service to keep black teens away.” People, especially the head of Crabtree Valley, argued that the memo was false—but the evidence proved against the contrary. The article aims to convince members of the African American community to boycott Crabtree Valley Mall and to “not spend your hard-earned money where your youths are not wanted.” Sister Margaret played a very important role in spreading the news and furthering the community’s boycott endeavors along with Dr. Moses.
